In this episode of STTA, we cover Edward Carson, our next speaker, and his connection to Irish Home Rule. We give a brief desciption of Edward Carsons childhood, but move quickly into some of his controversial cases, Oscar Wilde vs. John Sholto Douglas being one of them. Then we cover Edward Carsons strong stance against Irish Home Rule to prepare us for his speech, Ulster is Asking to Be Let Alone.

The Great Irish Famine lasted from 1845-1849. Five years later, Edward Carson was born on the 9th of February. He was the second of six kids. His father and mother, Edward Henry Carson and Isabella Lambert, had four boys and two girls. His grandfather moved to Dublin, Ireland from Scotland in 1815. They were a wealthy Protestant family. Carson’s mother Isabella was born and lived in Castle Ellen. Edward Carson himself spent holidays there, the castle was now owned by his uncle. His father was a prominent Architect and Civil Engineer, but Edward did not follow his footsteps.

He was educated at the Wesley College and Trinity College in Dublin, where he dove into law and history and became one of the prominent lawyers and politicians of his day. Carson had three very public and high profile cases: Oscar Wilde, Carbury Bros, and George Archer-Shee. All were high profile, but the Oscar Wilde case is one of the wilder ones. So, knowing this is a bit of a side track, I couldn’t help but give you a few of the details. Besides, Edward Carson is kind of a boring privileged Protestant.
