Genus: Wodyetia
Species: bifurcata
Family: ARECACEAE
Common name: Foxtail Palm
Plant type: Evergreen, Monocot
Origin: Australia- Northeastern Queensland
Habit:
There is only 1 species in the Wodyetia genus. The genus name commemorates an Aboriginal man named Wodyeti who helped introduce the Foxtail palm to botanists and nurseries.
The species name refers to the frond’s double leaflet arrangement, the leaflets being twice-divided.
A vibrant and attractive palm, usually 10m (32.8’) height but can reach 15m (49.2’) height; with a thick, bushy, fluffy crown of “fox’s tail” shaped fronds; pronounced crown shaft; profuse small flowers and profuse large fruit.
Trunk is slender, columnar; light grey; minor texture or coarse but has closely arranged rings of previous frond scars, brown - dark grey; can be slightly swollen at the base.
Fast growing, hardy, tropical, warm, hot, arid, humid, full sun, consistent water, well-draining soil. Tolerates wind, salt and sandy soils. Established or hardy specimens can tolerate subtropical, part shade, some cold, dry and drought.
Note that this palm will shed its dead fronds and drop flowers and fruit. The fruit seeds are poisonous if ingested.
Leaves:
A smooth, prominent crown shaft, usually half the length of mature fronds, 1m (3.2’) length; can be dull or pale green - greyish-green.
Palm tree foliage, fronds, compound, light green, some darker mid-greens; plumose frond; 2m-3m (6.5’-9.8’) length with pairs of opposite leaflets, 2 leaflets on each side of the rachis- described as bifurcate. Leaflets can grow to 30cm (11.8”) length.
Dead fronds are not persistent and will be shed to the ground.
Flowers:
Dirty olive-green inflorescence, emerging at the base of the crown shaft, can be as long as the crown shaft with profuse clusters of creamy light-green and yellowish buds, 3 buds per rank; opening to small, radiate, white flowers with creamy yellowish receptacle; flower head 2cm (0.78’) across; 2 male and 1 female per rank- female can be slightly larger. The flowers have 3 sepals and 3 pedals; male has numerous stamen and no ovules.
Fruit:
Profuse clusters, round, globular, green ripening to orange - red; can reach the size of an average egg, 5cm-7cm (1.9”-2.7”) length x 3cm-6cm (1”-2.3”) width; large calyx cap connecting to the stalk; raised, protruding or sunken flower scar remains at the blossom end.
Fruit has a single seed, fibrous, ribbed, dark brown - black, 3cm (1”) length x 2cm (0.78”) width.
The seeds are poisonous if ingested.
