Описание к видео PTCL Pensioners' Struggle for Justice: The Untold Story of Pakistan's Telecom Giants

In this video, we delve into the untold story of PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited) pensioners and employees who have faced grave injustices. PTCL, a prominent name in Pakistan, played a vital role in providing telecommunication services until its privatization in 2006.

After privatization, PTCL employees and pensioners were subjected to severe mistreatment, making it one of the darkest chapters in Pakistan's history. The power dynamics in Pakistan often favor the influential elite, including politicians, high-ranking government officials, landlords, and wealthy individuals. There's also a lesser-known sector that exploits their employees relentlessly, but their actions remain largely hidden, as they use their financial strength to silence criticism by buying advertising space in newspapers and channels.

In this video, we focus on the corporate sector, which, while offering substantial benefits to its employees, is not exempt from unfair practices, often perpetrated by a select few individuals in positions of power.

The story begins with PTCL, which, prior to privatization, was the sole provider of telecommunication services in Pakistan. When privatization occurred in 2006, the employees were promised various benefits under the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS). Approximately 35,000 employees accepted the offer, hoping for a secure future.

However, after a few years, PTCL started reducing the pensions of those who retired after 2001 and were over 60 years old. Despite protests and legal battles, PTCL continued this unfair practice. Even though all other government institutions had adjusted pensions in line with inflation, PTCL remained indifferent to its pensioners' plight.

The pensioners pursued their rights at every level, from local courts to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In June 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the pensioners, declaring the reduction of pensions illegal. However, PTCL appealed the decision, leading to a lengthy legal battle. To this day, payments have not been made to these pensioners, and justice remains elusive.

In August 2011, the National Assembly's Standing Committee on IT and in September 2019, the Senate's Standing Committee on IT approved a report recommending immediate payments to PTCL pensioners. The Senate of Pakistan also passed a resolution in January 2020 in support of these pensioners. Promises were made by various government officials, including the former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, but these promises were not honored.

Despite favorable rulings from the highest courts, the flaws in the system and legal loopholes have allowed PTCL to continue denying these pensioners their rights. Thousands of affected individuals remain determined to receive their rightful dues.

In this video, we shed light on the struggle of PTCL pensioners and employees and the need for their rights to be acknowledged and fulfilled. We urge you to support them in their pursuit of justice.
