After SmackDown superstar Rey Mysterio managed to win the 2006 Royal Rumble, RAW found itself without a headlining match going into WrestleMania 22. To combat this, a triple threat match was scheduled, with the winner going on to face whoever the champion would be (Edge or John Cena) at the Show of Shows.
