Our world is constantly changing, and healthcare technology is no exception. One of the many health tech changes is the growing use of mobile applications. If you have a smartphone, I’m willing to bet that you have at least one health-related app. A lot of devices automatically come with these. You might’ve also downloaded another platform for things like exercising, diet tracking, or one that connects to a wearable device like a Fitbit.
But new health technology isn’t the only big change we’ve seen in the world lately. People’s entire lives have changed with having to stay home. Everything going on right now with this plays a role in both our physical and mental health. But thankfully, there’s an app for that.

It’s always important to take care of your physical health, but especially now. Since we’re staying home more often, it’s easy to become less active and graze on unhealthy snacks. Gyms are closed so it can be even more difficult to motivate ourselves, especially if our home gym faces our couch. Plus, you now need to find exercises that you can do with little to no equipment. But there are so many apps to help you through your home workouts.
8fit is just one personal fitness tracker and meal planner. You first determine your wellness goals, measure your fitness levels, and record dietary preferences. The app then gives you customized workouts that you can do from home and a customized meal plan. It shows proper form and records progression. The recipes each include ingredient alternatives to cater toward dietary needs. Our diet affects our physical health, especially when we’re exercising. It can even help our immune system and mental health, so it’s important to pay attention to what we’re eating.
If you don’t prefer vigorous workouts, AllTrails is a great alternative for still keeping active. It lets you search for thousands of paths by location or even by activity whether it’s walking, running, or biking. Each trail has a difficulty-rating so users can pick what’s best for their fitness level. There are also filters for stroller-friendly, wheelchair-friendly, pet-friendly, and child-friendly trails.
Our mental health is just as important as our physical health because if one suffers, so does the other. It’s easy to have negative feelings right now with all of the unknowns and changes.
What’s Up and Calm are two apps to help with mental health. What’s Up has 12 common negative thinking patterns with methods to overcome them. There’s a positive and negative habits tracker, questions to ground users when stress is taking over, and breathing techniques for relaxation.
Calm is one of the top apps for sleep, meditation, and relaxation. With all of our current stress, it can be difficult to get adequate sleep. But getting poor sleep can worsen physical and mental health. Calm improves mindfulness with guided meditation, sleep stories, relaxing music, and breathing and stretching exercises. Many psychologists, therapists, and mental health experts recommend Calm because it improves sleep while lowering stress and anxiety.
Right now, we want to avoid the store as much as possible. OTCme can help limit trips out for picking up medicine. With this app, you input your specific symptoms and it finds over-the-counter medications to best treat you. This prevents you from buying ineffective medicine so you don’t need to make another trip. You also won’t need to waste time in the store reading confusing labels because you’ve already read them on the app.
Right now, a lot of people are avoiding or can’t get to the doctor. It isn’t good for our health to skip appointments, especially when we most need our health to be strong.
Ada is a symptom checker with a personalized health assessment. After the questionnaire, it assesses potential problems and gives relevant options, such as visiting a specialist.
HealthTap is one of the many telehealth visit apps out there right now. It has personalized medical information and guidance 24/7. You can get answers from doctors by submitting questions, searching existing questions and answers, or by setting up a video visit. All physicians are US-based and board-certified so they can fill prescriptions, order lab tests, or refer you to a specialist. This is helpful when you’re unsure if you need to make the trip to a doctor, or just need something simple but don’t want to risk picking up germs. It’s also useful if you do have a contagious illness, such as COVID-19, and don’t want to expose others.
