Known as the festival of chariots, it features three separate chariots for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balarama, and Goddess Subhadra. About 1,400 carpenters annually build these chariots, starting on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. Instead of using modern tools like measuring tapes, they employ an ancient technique, using hands and fingers for measurements. Wooden pegs and joints replace metal nails in this process.The chariots’ tops are designed to resemble the towers of the Jagannath Temple. Meanwhile, a team of 15 skilled tailors use 1,200 meters of cloth to craft the canopies. Before the journey commences, Puri’s Gajapati sweeps the floor with a golden broom, following tradition.
