For the first time in history, Bangladesh has resumed direct trade with Pakistan with the arrival of a 50,000-ton shipment of white rice from Karachi under a government-to-government (G2G) deal. This trade agreement, facilitated through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan, marks a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

The rice is being purchased at $499 per ton, which is higher than the $474.25 per ton rate Bangladesh pays for Vietnamese rice. However, this move aims to stabilize domestic rice prices, which have surged by 15-20% in recent months. To tackle rising food costs, Bangladesh has also removed import duties and invited further bids for an additional 50,000 tons of rice from Pakistan.
