It can take a long time for scientific research to have an impact at a 'grassroots' level but as a team of Hamilton-based researchers with the Department of Primary Industries Victoria will tell you, it's worth the wait.
Over the past ten years, they've been investigating how perennial native grasses can be used on southern Australian farms to restore marginal and unproductive areas of farming land to health. They've also used their knowledge about native grass to produce practical strategies for landholders.
What's the outcome?
In addition to limiting erosion, dryland salinity and loss of biodiversity (to name a few), those who adopt the team's strategies can increase the amount of pasture they produce for their livestock by 25 to 50 per cent within two years.
The other reason it's worth the wait? Last week, they were awarded the 2013 Samuel Wadham DPI Practice Change Award for their work. Congratulations!
