(16 Mar 2017) While shamrocks and smiles typically define the Irish prime minister's traditional St. Patrick's Day visit to the White House, Ireland's Prime Minister signaled more serious matters were discussed as well, including President Donald Trump's immigration policies and Brexit.
While Irish PM Enda Kenny called the meeting "constructive and engaging," he also urged undocumented Irish immigrants living in the U.S. to take care of any legal matters that could lead to their deportation under the Trump administration's priority to deport criminal undocumented immigrants.
Kenny has criticized Trump's immigration proposals in the past. Irish officials have said an estimated 50,000 Irish people in the U.S. illegally.
Kenny also said he and the president discussed the United Kingdom's decision to exit the European Union and how it would affect Ireland.
Kenny is the first European Union politician to meet with Trump after British Prime Minister Theresa May. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was scheduled to come to the White House on Tuesday, but that visit was moved back to Friday because of the snow.
