A 80‑year‑old Chinese woman named Qiu caused significant disruption at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. During boarding of China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 to Guangzhou, she tossed nine coins toward the jet engine – one even lodged inside the turbine. Concerned airline staff halted boarding and evacuated the roughly 150 passengers to allow mechanics to retrieve the coins and perform a full inspection. The flight, originally cleared for a 12:40 pm departure, didn’t take off until around 6:16 pm after all nine coins were recovered and the engine declared safe – a delay exceeding five hours.

Qiu, a devout Buddhist with no criminal record or mental health issues, said she sought to bless the journey with good luck. Though authorities deemed her actions disruptive to airport operations, her age led them to waive a five-day administrative detention under China’s public safety laws.

This single incident reportedly cost the airline hundreds of thousands of yuan in manpower, equipment usage, and passenger inconvenience. Experts warn that even a small object like a coin can damage the compressor blades, potentially causing engine failure mid-flight. Following the event, Chinese airports and airlines increased efforts to alert passengers that tossing coins at aircraft, though culturally symbolic, poses serious safety hazards.
