Artist Guadalupe Maravilla is a transdisciplinary artist, healer, and activist. Maravilla utilizes his practice as a forum for collective healing. The Disease Thrower sculptures feature elements collected as Maravilla retraced his migration route from El Salvador to the United States as a young boy, and they also incorporate symbols and figures that represent his battle with cancer. The sculptures became a medium for the artist to confront and work through his past traumas.

Each Disease Thrower sculpture Maravilla creates also includes complex gong structures. The gongs are intended to be played during sound bath sessions conducted by Maravilla and his team to create a space for healing and connection with communities he identifies with, particularly those who are cancer survivors and/or originate from Spanish speaking countries of Central and South America.
