View Towers is in Harris Green neighborhood of Victoria, Canada. This concrete 19-story rental building was complected in 1970. It has 357 tiny apartments for people to live in. According to old news stories, this building was left unpainted for its first 15 years over a property-development dispute with the City.

This building has had many disputes over the years, even the owner had transferred property he owned into West Park Investments to get around the Landlord and Tenant act, by leasing all the apartments to him self. Then later on started kicking out people that had lower rent prices and making new higher rents. After this scandal broke in 2014 was reported that 85 low-rent tenants, most old age pensioners, where kicked out to the streets from the View Towers.

According to a report by the Victoria Emergency Management Agency. A total of 86 suites were damaged by smoke and water, displacing 70 residents. Twenty-three of those were damaged by fire in a ninth-floor apartment unit on May 15, 2014.

It’s unclear if any undamaged, vacant suites have been offered to displaced residents, but most people have been told to look for new homes, and other displaced residents received a letter which said they are being evicted under section 44 of the Residential Tenancy Act because their tenancy has become “frustrated” as a result of the fire. At that time of fire from what I understand there was about 100 vacant apartments in the building.
