The term snake oil salesman is one that has stood the test of time, being used even today to describe someone selling something as a cure all despite it being worthless. This term has its roots in the historical practice of dramatic street salesmen promoting the wildly exaggerated benefits of their wares through charismatic theatrical demonstrations. But there was one salesman who was so successful at deceiving his customers, that he completely changed the meaning of the words “Snake Oil Salesmen.” Because at one point, Snake Oil really was an effective form of medicine, but in looking for an easy way to make a lot of money, Clark Stanley would damage its reputation, leave a legacy that serves as a cautionary tale about trusting overzealous marketers, and pave the way for an incredibly harmful group of con artists.
