Rory Stewart, who ran against Boris Johnson in 2019, says the current Prime Minister wears the mask of a “blundering buffoon” which, despite what his supporters hope, cannot be removed and has reached "into his mind, his body, his soul"

Rory Stewart joined Rachel Cunliffe to discuss Boris Johnson, the current Conservative leadership election, the future of civility in UK politics and more.

During his time in the Foreign Office, Stewart worked under Johnson, claiming that he was “impossible to have a serious conversation with.”

As someone who has experienced what it is like to run to be the leader of the Conservative party, Rory Stewart identifies the tendencies of candidates in the current Leadership election (whittled down at this stage to just Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss) to pretend to be more right-wing. For example, in the case of the Rwanda policy, Stewart argued that "people who I think opposed the Rwanda policy are now claiming that they support it."
