The Mariana Trench is considered the deepest place on Earth. It's located in the western Pacific Ocean and reaches a depth of approximately 36,070 feet (10,994 meters). The trench is formed by the collision of two tectonic plates, the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The deepest part of the Mariana Trench is known as the Challenger Deep, named after the HMS Challenger, the ship that first surveyed the trench in 1875. The extreme depths of the Mariana Trench present significant challenges for exploration, and only a few manned and unmanned missions have reached its bottom.
