Google had a big shindig planned in Canberra this evening for its annual showcase - until the government's announcement this morning that YouTube, one of its businesses, would be added to the list of social media platforms banned for under-16s.

The decision means underage users won't be able to sign up for accounts, preventing them from uploading videos, commenting, and communicating with others on the site.
