Are your prayers too proud or too humble? Jesus shares a powerful parable in Luke 18 about two men who went to the temple to pray. The first was a Pharisee, a respected religious leader, who proudly listed his good deeds: "God, I thank you that I'm not like other people... I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get." His prayer was essentially a resume of his own righteousness, full of pride and comparison.

The second man was a despised tax collector who stood at a distance, wouldn't even look up to heaven, and simply beat his chest saying, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner." His prayer was a humble plea for mercy.

Jesus's shocking conclusion: the tax collector, not the religious leader, went home justified before God. Why? The tax collector approached God with a broken, humble heart, completely dependent on God's mercy. The Pharisee came with pride, depending on his own goodness.
