Musical Explorers, a year-round program developed in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, is designed to connect students in grades K-2 to the diverse musical community that exists right outside their front door. Reaching more than 10,000 children and more than 300 teachers at 50 schools throughout Savannah and the surrounding five counties, the tuition-free program builds basic music and life skills as students learn songs from different cultures, reflect on their own communities, and engage in music exercises that incorporate lessons in history, geography, literacy, mathematics and social studies. After focusing on three distinct musical genres each semester term, interactive concerts held in the fall and spring allow students to ‘meet’ the professional musicians that have guided them on their musical journeys through the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry and beyond.

During the fall semester of the 2015-16 school year, Musical Explorers learned about Soul Music, Cajun Music, and Musical Theatre. In December 2015 students and their teachers were invited to a free concert where they got to meet the artists representing each genre: Laiken (Soul Music), Megan, Drew and Kelly (Cajun Music) and J.J. (Musical Theatre).
