U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, for the first time since he announced that he was ending his re-election bid.

His decision came after fellow Democrats lost faith in his mental acuity and ability to beat Republican rival Donald Trump, following a televised presidential debate last month that raised alarm within the party.

"My vision for America's future all merited a second term. But nothing, nothing, can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So I've decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It's the best way to unite our nation," Biden said.

"I revere this office, I love my country more," he added.

Shortly after his Sunday announcement, Biden endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the party's nominee for the November presidential election. In a post on social media platform X, the 81-year-old president said that he will remain in his role as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025.

Meanwhile, Trump, 78, secured the Republican nomination at the party's July convention in Milwaukee, just days after surviving an assassination attempt at a campaign rally.
