Del Norte Place Historic District is bordered by Virginia Avenue on the north, Encanto Boulevard on the south, 15th Avenue on the east and 17th Avenue on the west.

The Encanto Municipal Golf Course wraps around the northern and western edges of this roughly 1/4 mile historic district, while beautiful Encanto Park cradles the neighborhood on the eastern edge. Ad agencies originally sold Del Norte Place as “the countryside west of town” when the subdivision was created back in 1927, and it still evokes a strong sense of “countryside” today.

Del Norte Place Historic District was developed by Dr. James Collier Norton. It was opened to the public in 1927. Conceived as an English Cottage style neighborhood, further development of surrounding areas enclosed Del Norte Place on three sides by park greenbelt. Later, construction featured Ranch and Period Revival homes to be showcased in Dr. Norton’s “beautiful subdivision.”

Blends of English Cottages, Pueblo Revivals, Tudor Revivals, Bungalows, French Provincial Ranches, Spanish Colonial Revivals, Period Revivals and early 1940s California Ranch-style homes are found in this historic district along with some 1920s and 1930s English Cottages. Corner casement windows were popular on some Early Ranch-style homes. Don’t expect a huge garage in this neighborhood but you can expect manicured homes with cozy front porches. But we must admit that it is hard to believe you’re in the 5th largest city in the U.S. when you’re in Del Norte Place.

Homes in the Del Norte Place Historic District were built between 1927 and 1945. Encanto Park, with its 222 acres of picnic areas, playgrounds, lagoons, wildlife, nature trails and golf courses, made the Del Norte Place district a desirable location for homebuyers in the mid-twentieth century.
