Puttu is a very popular and traditional breakfast item of Kerala. Puttu is a very healthy breakfast because it is steamed and no oil is used. Puttu is a carbohydrate and protein rich diet that can kee you active throughout the day.

Puttu is made by slowly adding water to rice flour until the correct texture is achieved. Using hot water will improve the softness of puttu.

Puttu is cooked in puttu mould. It has 2 sections. The lower section holds water and the upper section holds puttu. Fill the puttu mould with rice mixture topped with grated coconut. Steam for 10 minutes. You can serve puttu with papadam, jaggery, bananas or sugar.

Puttu can be made with 2 types of rice - normal rice and red rice/ Chemba rice.

Rice flour is a fine flour made from ground rice. It contains a healthy amount of insoluble fibre. It is rich in Calcium, thus maintains bone and skeletal health. Rice flour is ideal for people gluten-related problems or for those who have digestive and bowel related problems.

Red rice or Chemba rice is made of coarse lay ground rice that has been washed, soaked and dried before being coarsely ground. This contains antioxidants and Vitamin B6. This lowers cholesterol level, helps to prevent heart disease, lowers blood pressure and lowers the risk of obesity.
