The dusty, little town of Mathura, nestled along the banks of the mighty Yamuna River, exerts great importance on the historical and cultural maps of India. As the birthplace of Lord Krishna and home to many events surrounding his life, Mathura has grown in leaps and bounds as a religious centre of Hinduism, chiefly Krishna worship. At the centre of the Braj Dhaam which comprises Vrindavan, Govardhana and Gokul, Mathura is well connected by road and rail from New Delhi, the capital, lying as it does on the main trunk line that connects the northern, southern and western parts of India. Its vantage position on the Delhi-Agra National Highway, easy accessibility and connectivity to other well-known places of tourism and sightseeing have made Mathura a hub of activity all through the year.
Parikrama or Pradakshina refers to circumambulation of sacred places in Vrindavan. It is customary for devotees to walk around the town of Vrindavan. There is a parikrama path that goes around the town. This path is one street over from the ISKCON temple. It usually takes two to three hours to go around Vrindavana. The parikrama path is 10 km (6 miles). Some of the places passed on the way are: Madana Ter, Kaliya Ghata, Madana Mohana Temple, Imli Tala, Sringara Vat, and Keshi Ghata etc on the bank of Yamuna Ji, then from Keshi Ghat to Dhira Samira, Tatiya Sthaan etc.
The Govardhan Parikrama is a 21 km (7 kos) pilgrimage around the Govardhan Hill in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The pilgrimage can be started from any point, but it typically begins at the Manasi-Ganga Kund lake. The route then passes through Radha-kunda village, where the Vrindavan road meets the pilgrimage path. The pilgrimage includes many smaller pilgrimages and stops at various sites.
