A first look at the chequer board pattern of the single graves in Portrane Asylum cemetery. A grave space consists of the grave shaft and banks to the side and head & foot of the grave. The banks are the undug ground and the use of burial rows forms a corrugated effect within the cemetery.
This isn't a Famine related burial ground but there are lessons to be learned from these 20th century burial practices which will help us better understand Famine related burials.
