In this inspiring short film, Darwin Leader Jessica Tax explores efforts to restore one of the world’s most endangered biodiversity hotspots: Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Once a sprawling rainforest teeming with life, the Atlantic Forest has been reduced to fragmented patches over the past 200 years due to agriculture, roads, pastureland, and a 187-kilometre oil pipeline. This fragmentation has severely affected many species by cutting off access to food, water, and safe shelter. But a movement of hope is underway—corridors are being built to reconnect forest fragments, and entire landscapes are being rewilded to give nature a second chance. Jessica’s project highlights the urgency of habitat connectivity while showing that with determination and cooperation, large-scale ecological restoration is still within reach. Her message is clear: if we care and act now, the Atlantic Forest can thrive again in our lifetime.

Jessica Tax holds an MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford, where she graduated with merit. Deeply passionate about conservation, she also volunteers for sustainability initiatives, aiming to inspire others to take action.
