Roosevelt Island in New York City is home to many historical landmarks, with one of the most interesting being the Smallpox Hospital located on the southern end of the island.
Upon entering FDR Four Freedoms Park, the view of the hospital is haunting - even on a warm summer day. With all the windows and internal structures missing, it’s incredible to imagine this once housed 100 patients after its completion in 1856. Its main purpose was to treat recent immigrants who were sick - keeping them away from the general population until they recovered. All in all, around 133,000 people were treated during its tenure as a smallpox hospital. James Renwick, Jr. was the designer - considered to be one of the leading American architects of the second half of the 19th century.
The building, now in disrepair, is being preserved for its historical value on the National Register of Historic places - in that regard, it’s the only official ruin in New York City. With Roosevelt Island feeling like half the speed of New York City, I highly recommend you hop the tram and spend a day exploring.
