[Intermediate] How to fold an Origami Pop-It Tessellation from a square of paper. As shown in the intro and outro, this fidget toy can do a lot more than just pop it. You can spin it, wear it, throw it, bounce your finger on it. This model I showed in this video is from a 16X16 grid, but it could easily be made from any size grid... even a 3X3 grid! -- That would make one single simple dimple! This model was requested of me by my student Anton during a Zoom tutoring session and I essentially went the path of the Easy Flasher Tessellation, but with the flashers all spinning in the same direction. A related model could also be made with neighboring flashers alternating in opposite directions like how a chessboard has neighboring squares of opposite colors. Speaking of a chessboard, this model when squished together takes on the form of a 3-D chessboard pattern that can be seen from the front or the back side.

This model is simple enough that I'm sure that it's been done before, even by me a long time ago! I don't know who first came up with the pattern but my guess would be Kawasaki, Huffman, Fuse or Fujimoto and I'll add credit if someone can tell me for sure who created it first. However, even so, the new aspect of this model is that it is Pop-It (and other stuff) so that I feel THAT is definitely taking it a step further, especially given how crazy popular pop-its currently are!

Although I led the way in designing this model, it was my student Anton's idea to try to make a Pop-It Tessellation and it was also his choice that all the flashers rotate in the same direction, so if it weren't for his participation, this model would not have popped into existence. So, in my opinion he deserves co-authorship. That is how a lot of my Zoom sessions go. First, I ask my students what they would like for us to try to design and then we go for it, with me mostly leading the way, explaining my thought process as we fold. I'm also very open to going in whatever direction my students nudge me even if the model ends up turning into something completely different than what we were originally aiming for. It's the process that counts, and more often than not, I'm surprised at what we come up with.
