On Tuesday 18 April 2017, PM Malcolm Turnbull announced the ban of the 457 Visa and an important reform of the Immigration System in order to “ensure that the foundation of [the successful Australian immigration nation] is maintained and the foundation is that [the] migration system is seen to work in the national interest.”

“It will ensure foreign workers are brought into Australia in order to fill critical skill gaps and not brought in simply because an employer finds it easier to recruit a foreign worker than go to the trouble of hiring an Australian.” said Malcolm Turnbull.

On September 30, 2016 there were 95,757 workers in Australia on primary 457 visas. Notice that these people who currently hold 457 are not affected by the changes!
