Hyem is a high-quality participatory arts programme, produced and delivered by GemArts. Hyem means Home is Geordie!

Over 2020-21, GemArts professional artists worked with marginalised and vulnerable Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and wider communities, across Gateshead and Newcastle, offering culturally relevant arts activities, through online platforms and bespoke arts packs creation and delivery. GemArts Hyem enabled communities, families and young people to come together, take part, share and celebrate their creativity, allowing people a chance to feel less isolated and improve their own health and wellbeing during a time when people had to stay indoors.

Hyem captures diverse narratives of what Home meant to people before, during and beyond the pandemic, exploring the themes of belonging, community, resilience, kindness and hope for the future.
