On behalf of Reiki Australia, Carol wa are proud to present you with this wonderful interview with Dr Justin B. Stein, who is an esteemed Canadian historian and academic whose work focuses on the global transmission and transformation of Japanese spiritual practices.

Justin is Chair of Asian Studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and is recognised internationally for his in-depth research into the history of Reiki Ryōhō. His scholarship bridges East and West, shedding light on how Reiki evolved from its origins with Mikao Usui in Japan to its global practice today.

Dr Stein is known for his thoughtful exploration of the cultural, spiritual, and historical threads that have shaped Reiki as we know it. He is a contributor to key publications on energy medicine and Japanese spiritual traditions and works to promote respectful intercultural understanding. His work is especially valuable for Reiki practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding of Reiki’s roots and its historical development.

Dr Stein’s scholarly work focuses on Reiki, new religious movements, and spiritual healing in modern Japan. He is particularly known for his research into the lives and teachings of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, and Hawayo Takata — the foundational figures in the development and global transmission of Reiki. Drawing from Japanese-language sources and archival material, Dr Stein offers a deeply contextualised understanding of Reiki’s origins and evolution.
