A Phenomenological Study of Spiritual and Identity Development of Armenian-American College Graduates on the East Coast

Abstract: This phenomenological qualitative study investigated the spiritual and identity development of Armenian-American college graduates between 2019-2024 in the Northeast. Using data from 11 interviews, data analysis yielded four primary themes, including (1) acculturation and familism, (2) Armenian faith and spirituality, (3) Armenian-American identity, (4) involvement on-campus and in the ASA, and (5) community involvement. Results revealed while involvement in an Armenian Student Association (ASA) did not directly impact one’s spiritual or faith development, the ASA provided a safe space for students to turn to and guided them in their ethnic identity development. Implications for student affairs practitioners and recommendations for future research are also discussed.
