This week we stepped into Mary’s story to understand the surprising way God enters ordinary life and consider how Mary’s story looks like discipleship. While Mary wasn’t looking for interruption, complication, or a complete redirection of her future, that’s exactly what she received. Her world was turned upside down and in this space Mary received the true Messiah. Mary’s story is representative of what it means to accept the Messiah we need, who came through a distinct set of circumstances. Discipleship demands that we accept Jesus on his terms.

What does this mean?

It means that while we most often want a Messiah who makes life easier, who fits our expectations, who blesses our plans, the Messiah we need is the One who steps straight into the mess of our neighborhoods — into the routines, relationships, pressures, and hidden places where we actually live — to request our surrender to his greater plans. This message invites us to see Advent not as sentiment, but as God interrupting our lives in real time. Just as Mary said, “Let it be to me according to Your word,” we are invited to open our calendars, our priorities, our habits, and our presence in the neighborhood to the God who still comes close and still transforms the world through ordinary people.
