The Prophet is a book of 26 poems written in English by the Lebanese-American
writer Kahlil Gibran. Originally published in 1923, it is his best-known work and
has been translated into over 40 different languages. There are chapters on a number
of subjects including joy and sorrow, freedom, work, reason and passion, pain,
self-knowledge, teaching and friendship - words that readers around the world
have found inspirational and life-changing. I have chosen to set 3 of the better-known
sections and these can be performed individually or as a group:

1. On Marriage
2. On Children
3. On Death

(Or "matches, hatches and dispatches" as a vicar friend of mine quipped).

The musical style is lush and rich, often scored for double choir, and would
be effective in a church or a buiding with a generous acoustic, but the words are
paramount and their audibility and meaning should never be sacrificed for sheer
beauty of sound. The expression and communication of the text will be best
served by lots of clear consonants and a natural speech-like delivery.

This choral setting of The Prophet is dedicated to my amazing wife, Joanna. To quote
Gibran, I feel so privileged to be another string on the same lute, quivering with the
same music as you.
