An exclusive full-length recording of BART's ride out of West Contra Costa County, as a 10-car San Francisco/Millbrae train heads toward Downtown Oakland during the mid-afternoon hours on a gorgeous Bay Area weekday.

This is the first time, since BART began service in 1972, that this southbound stretch of the system has ever been shot, even from a passenger's perspective. Here, travelers -- both locals and visitors alike -- are treated to picturesque views of quiet neighborhoods in Richmond, El Cerrito and Oakland, plus an underground run through busy Berkeley.

In all, this four-city journey from Richmond to MacArthur runs roughly 20 minutes long, and is one of a couple stretches on BART not entrenched alongside a Bay Area freeway. Other examples include all eight (8) San Francisco stops spanning Embarcadero and Balboa Park, plus the distance between Bay Fair Station in San Leandro and Lake Merritt Station in Oakland.

Richmond Station geographically is the northernmost point in the BART system, and the beginning stop for all destinations bound for San Francisco and the peninsula or Fremont. MacArthur Station on the north end of Oakland is the first southbound transfer opportunity for passengers looking to switch between the Richmond-Millbrae, Richmond-Fremont and Pittsburg/Bay Point-SFO lines.

With trains from Richmond always arriving on Platform 2 at MacArthur, Pittsburg/Bay Point travelers must go down through the station and back up to Platform 3. San Francisco Airport passengers can simply cross over to Platform 4.

Although this clip is filmed on a San Francisco-bound train, the views are the same on Fremont destinations.
