The Kola Superdeep Borehole, begun in 1970 on Russia’s Arctic Kola Peninsula, was humanity’s boldest attempt to drill into the Earth’s crust for pure scientific exploration. Using specially engineered equipment, Soviet scientists pushed deeper year after year, breaking world records and ultimately reaching a depth of 12,262 meters in 1989—far deeper than any other borehole in history. Rather than finding the expected basaltic layers, they encountered ancient granites filled with water pockets and hydrogen gas, and the temperature at the bottom soared to 180°C, nearly double what scientists predicted, eventually causing the solid rock to become plastic and oozing back into the borehole.
Despite extraordinary discoveries and international acclaim, the Kola project stalled in the early 1990s as equipment failed and funding dried up in the wake of the Soviet Union’s collapse. The borehole was shuttered, its cover welded shut; for decades, deep Earth exploration seemed abandoned.
