In diamond clarity grading, VS diamonds have 2 grades: VS1 (very slightly included 1) and VS2 (very slightly included 2). The vs1 grade is higher than the vs2 grade but the real differences between these 2 grades are minute in terms of appearance.

In my opinion, VS diamonds (BOTH vs1 and vs2) are great choices for shoppers who are looking to get better value for money. Compared to VVS or IF diamonds, the VS diamonds look identical and are much lower priced. For some perspective, a VS2 diamond can cost 20-25% less than a VVS1 diamond.

To the naked eye and without the aid of any magnification tools, both VS1 and VS2 diamonds do not have inclusions that will cause haziness or impede light rays. They are also no structural or durability problems caused by VS1 and VS2 diamonds.

The point is, VS diamonds aren’t flawless and they do contain inclusions like most other naturally mined diamonds. What is great about them is that they strike a good balance between eyecleanliness and costs.

So, what’s the difference between VS2 and VS1? Well, a vs1 clarity diamond has no eye visible inclusions and have hard to see flaws under a 10X loupe. Vs2 diamonds are typically eyeclean as well and the common types of inclusions found in them are faint crystals, feathers, indented naturals, knots and needles.

When people shop for diamonds, they get overly worried about clarity when it is actually a minor issue that the eyes won’t see.
Instead of spending more time on assessing and choosing a diamond based on cut quality, they choose to focus on clarity. And getting a poorly cut diamond with IF clarity will not result in a more beautiful diamond with SI or VS clarity that is well cut.

In terms of clarity grading and nomenclature, the differences between vs2 vs vs1 diamonds are largely technical. Price wise, the differences between these 2 grades range from 5-10% depending on carat size. When it comes to selecting VS diamonds, I recommend getting those that are off-center inclusions and avoiding dark color inclusions. Also, you should only buy diamonds that are graded by GIA or AGS for a reliable and accurate assessments.
