Districts, schools, and teachers continue to grapple with the problem of secondary students' underperformance in math. In this free webinar, two authorities on math teaching and learning introduce problem-based instruction (PBI), a research-based, student-centered instructional strategy that can deepen students' understanding of, and engagement with, mathematical learning.

In their new book Implementing Problem-Based Instruction in Secondary Mathematics Classrooms (Teachers College Press, 2024), authors Sarah Ferguson and Denise Polojac-Chenoweth show how to facilitate learning by making connections between mathematical concepts and real-world applications, rather than through noncontextual, rote learning of skills, steps, and equations. With practical and informative instructional tools, they show how PBI uses rich mathematical tasks to connect students' previously acquired math knowledge to new mathematical concepts.

This webinar is for pre- and inservice secondary math teachers, instructional coaches, curriculum coordinators, mathematics teacher educators, and others wishing to learn about how to enhance the instruction of math teachers at all levels. The authors will take attendees through instructional strategies, best practices, and guidance for implementation. They will share resources from the book, including lesson plans aligned to the most common secondary mathematics topics, and guide teachers through creating their own problem-based lessons.
