Описание к видео Community Conversations: Hiring for the Prince William County Police Department

For this episode of Community Conversations we spoke with Officer Hillary Szalach from the Prince William County Police Department about their hiring efforts.

Q: What kind of qualifications do you look for in police officers?

A: So the minimum qualifications to become a police officer – you have to be a U.S. citizen, first of all, have a valid driver’s license, be at least 21-years old when you graduate the Academy. So you can begin the Academy when you’re 20, as long as you turn 21 before you graduate. You have to have a relatively clean background – so no felonies or serious misdemeanors. There’s also a hearing and vision check.\

Q: One of the things people are talking about, especially even the Chief was talking about it in one of his Community Conversations was diversity in the police force. Are there certain places that you’re going or is it just part of the community? How do you try to address that?

A: As you said, one of the Chief’s big initiatives is we want to make the department reflective of the community that we live in. And we are a minority majority community, so one of the biggest places we look to get our minority applications is going to be in our own community. We do a lot of local recruiting – we’ve had our own job fair, our own career fair at the police station – we go around to, we reach out to churches, to gyms in the area, we set up at Potomac Mills once a month. So, we do a lot of local recruiting. There’s also some other things we do, targeting like minority colleges or historically black colleges and universities – places like that. As well as the military. We get a lot of minorities from the military as well.
