"Make A Memory," holds a special place in my heart. I wrote it back in 1986 as a reaction to my brothers and I break up of our band, capturing that bittersweet moment when we decided to go our separate musical ways. My father asked what have I been working on, and I played it for him. He enjoyed the song and upon his request it was featured as the theme for ESPN's "The Fishin Hole" beginning in 1986 and ran in the opening of the show until 1991.
Fast forward to 2022, Martin Young who I played it for (and others), were always saying I should play this song in our sets, but I knew I didn’t have the right voice for it, so I decided to recut it with a new singer. This was the catalyst for the search of a new singer. (although I didn't think she would become a part of the band I was envisioning) Then a good friend of Martin Young, John Paquet, turned me to another Ojai native Tim Mullins, who in turn brought me the one and only Tendo Gloria.
Hailing from the vibrant land of Uganda, Tendo's journey took her from performing with her spiritual group across the US until covid in 2020, landing in Ojai, California.
We met at Libby Park in Ojai and we ran the song and I immediately fell in love with her natural ability. (I have a iphone cut of this first time we met and played it that upon her approval we might release someday) I rember her saying that she was afraid it was going to be a bad meet up, but in her surprise and mine, it was a great one! She loved the song.
In this cut she is gracing my song with her incredibly natural talent as we cut the feature vocal in Warren Ross studio in Santa Barbara.
Since this cut, I slowly was convinced I should have her in all the tunes and she slowly graced us with her unique unplanned relaxed style for the next 3 years in performance and in recording, that is becoming an integral part of Soul Stingers now in 2025. She is like another instrument to the band and I my opinion, and important one.
My favorite thing is that she didn't grow up in the US and has had no expectations of how something should go, but rather flows naturally in the moment. As a producer, I keep telling her and trying to tell the others in the band, that perfect isn't always best. More times, real time and first cut is best.
Not only does she bring her vocals to the table, but she also adds a touch of harmony that elevates the entire band to new heights now. It's awesome and untouchable. I'm inspired by her in the simplest way when we perform together. One thing's for sure: we're all making memories that will last a lifetime. Here's to the power of music to bring us together.
