If you are planning on going this is how to drive on K’Gari, Fraser Island & how to not get booged at Inskip Point. It is simple, correct tyre pressure is key. All the information below is what you need to know!
If you want to 4wd on K’Gari, Fraser Island, you will need a 4wd. Over the years of visiting, I have seen several SUVs and soft roaders achieve the island. Ultimately if you want to see it all, you will need a proper 4wd. It is important to point out you do not need a heavily modified 4wd to do K’Gari, Fraser Island. Any 4wd with low range and the correct tyre pressures will get you everywhere.
What you need to bring – at minimum.
• Permits – beach driving permit & camping permits.
• Barge ticket – available on the Manta Ray or at the Rainbow Beach office. I always come across from Inskip point you do not need to book for this Barge. There is also a barge that comes across from Harvey Bay, this requires booking.
• Accommodation – there is houses, resorts and camping available. Camping in several different spots will allow you to see and experience the most K’Gari, Fraser Island has to offer.
• Food and supplies -you want to be fully self-sufficient on the island. You can buy most things, but it is at a premium being on an island.
• Tide information – there are free tide charts available everywhere in Rainbow Beach and Harvey Bay to make this easy.
Other key information.
• Tides – its recommended to only travel 2 hours either side of low tide. You can stretch this out with caution.
• Towns – Eurong, Happy Valley, Cathedrals, Orchid Beach & Kingfisher Bay Resort
• Fuel – readily available at all the major towns.
• Phone signal – Reasonable around all the major towns, non-existent most other places.
• Emergency services – Police and Ambulance eastern side near Eurong
• Bars and fast food – around all the major towns
• Showers - Dundubara Campground QPWS and Waddy Point. Coin operated.
• Rubish disposal – spots signed along the eastern beach
• Wildlife – Dingos, snakes and all the usual creepy crawlies you’d expect in the bush
• Dingo safety -do not pet, do not approach, clean up after cooking and keep all rubbish locked away
Tyre Pressures and driving
It is important to note this is a guide only, depending on warmer weather conditions you may need to go lower. Remember in modern 4wds to turn off traction and stability control or use sand mode.
• Inskip Point - 15 psi if it has been hot, this is where most people get caught out it is notoriously soft. Nobody wants to end up on “I got bogged at Inskip Point“!
• Hook Point - 20 psi, once around the point you can easily go back to 20 psi.
• Eastern beaches south of Orchid Beach 20 psi.
• Inland tracks – 20psi, K’Gari, Fraser Island inland tracks speed is 30 kmh. They are mostly only one vehicle wide yet a two-way track. They’re rough but not overly soft.
• Eli Creek – 20 psi - slow down and check the depth.
• Indian Head and anything north – 15psi Notoriously soft.
• Indian Head – 15psi Notoriously soft.
• Champagne pools / Orchid Beach inland tracks 15 psi – extremely soft for inland tracks.
• Ngkala Rocks – 15psi Notoriously soft.
• Sandy Cape – once past Ngkala it’s smooth sailing, just keep an eye on the tide!
• Western Beaches – 20psi, K’Gari, Fraser Island western beaches are softer than the eastern beaches.

This is the way I like to do K’Gari, Fraser Island, 4 night 5 days to see the most.
Day 1
• Go across through Inskip point and Hook Point
• Visit Eurong then head inland to lake McKenzie
• Kingfisher Bay (I could take or leave this)
• Back to the eastern side and up to Woralie Rd to head west. There is a lookout for a massive sand blow on this track
• Camp on the Western Beach - Woralie Creek is my pick.
• Western Beach sunset
Day 2
• Head back east and up to Orchid Beach
• Skip Eli Creek and S.S. Maheno – I like to do these on the way back
• Orchid Beach – get fuel and have a beer and a pie at the Driftwood bar.
• Ngkala Rocks – Iconic K’Gari, Fraser Island beach 4WDing.
• Sandy Cape – light house & pristine beach
• Camp up the Cape
• Sandy Cape sunset
Day 3
• Back Orchid Beach
• Champagne Pools & boardwalk
• Back down the East check out Red Canyon and The Pinnacles
• S.S. Maheno
• Camp in Beach camping zone 5 in between S.S. Maheno and Eli Creek.
• Beers on the frontal dune with sun setting behind you
Day 4
• Eastern Beach sunrise
• Eli Creek – Spend most of the day here
• Camp in Beach camping zone 2
• Beers on the frontal dune with sun setting behind you
Day 5
• Back to Hook Point and off K’Gari, Fraser Island.
On this trip we spend 4 nights and 5 days. Exploring the best way to see K’Gari, Fraser Island for some one that has never been before. A taste of everything that K’Gari, Fraser Island has to offer. From the Eastern beach to the inland lakes, the Western side and all the way to sandy Cape the most northern part of K’Gari, Fraser Island.
