Did Karl Marx... save capitalism?

We think of Karl Marx (1818-1883) as a guy who criticised capitalism and theorised a new communist system to replace it. But why didn't communism take over from capitalism in the West, as Marx had predicted? Did some of the ideas he proposed in the Communist Manifesto actually end up saving capitalism in the long term?
