The Aparte Project: Nevermore
Nevermore is yet another thought-provoking song from The Aparte Project. Inspired by the famous poem The Raven by American author Edgar Allan Poe, it tells the story of a guy who can’t seem to come to terms with the fact that his loved one has left him, maybe not in a physical sense, but indeed lost to madness. Each night he lies awake thinking about her, but for all his longing and self-pitying, she is not coming back.
Then one night, the strangest thing happens: A raven enters his room, and in one last despairing glimpse of hope, he wonders if it could be his lucky bird. I’ve been weeping like a willow, he tells it, and pleads with it to bring him a message “from the other side”: When will she rest her head on my pillow again?
As it turns out, he does get an answer, but as the chorus goes: ”Nevermore”, quoth the raven, sitting on my shoulder, it may not be the answer he was hoping for. But then again: Ravens are not usually considered to be lucky birds, but could this one actually be telling him what he needs to hear to get on with his life?
In terms of the music, Nevermore starts out with a sinister but beautiful introduction that sets the scene and catches the eerie atmosphere of the song. If you’re out on the dance floor, it will give you time to get better acquainted with your partner, until the band sets in with its usual, rock-oriented but melodious accompaniment and helps carry the story to its final, dark conclusion.
