I woke up at 7 in a city whose name already felt distant. It was raining—a soft, steady rain that soaked the red earth and misted the hills. After ten days of riding through Rwanda, today was the day I would leave. My destination was Rusumo, the border town, just 20 kilometers away.

The ride was quiet, the road slick and shiny under the gray sky. I reached the border around 10. Getting my Tanzania visa was simple—fifty dollars, a few stamps, and it was done. No one checked my bag or my bicycle. It felt unusual, almost too easy, as if Rwanda was letting me go without a fuss.

I stood for a moment before crossing, looking back. Rwanda had been good to me. Clean roads, green hills, quiet mornings. It was a place that stayed in my heart, orderly and kind.

Then I crossed.

On the other side, the rain was still falling, but everything else felt different. Tanzania greeted me with an uphill climb—a long, slow rise that seemed to say: This is a new land. You’ll have to work for it.

I bought a Vodacom SIM from a small shop near the border, feeling the shift in language, in energy, in the weight of the air. Then I started pedaling uphill, into the rain, toward a city I didn’t yet know. The road stretched ahead, wet and steep, and I moved into it, leaving one story behind, beginning another.
