Often times we can feel disconnected from our children when they enter into the adolescent and teenage years. A normal question to have for parents is "should I be concerned?"

Dr. Damour tries to address some of the more concerning things we should be thinking about in this video.

Our children change during this period of their life. It's just something we need to adjust to.

However, if our children are using things to avoid or suppress or "turn off" emotions, that should be an indicator that we may need to intervene.

Two of the most common ways for kids to do this is through substance use or chronic distraction.

We should be acutely aware of how are children are acting in relation to these things, and if they are truly abusing, we likely need to step in and get them some help.
