This time, our hosts visited Nakatsu City in Oita Prefecture.

First up, they headed for Yabakei in Nakatsu City, whose spacious grounds run 22 miles east to west and 19 miles north to south.
The countless rows of oddly-shaped rocks, formed by the deep erosion of the Yamakuni River into the lava plateau near the border of Oita and Fukuoka Prefecture, is like a natural work of art created over millennia sure to take your breath away.

Yabakei is counted amongst Japan's Three Great Rare Scenic Beauties and the New Three Views of Japan, and is one of Japan's Three Great Fall Foliage Spots.
Light-up events are held during the foliage season, making the red maple and yellow ginkgo leaves appear as if on fire under the dazzling light, dressing the rock face in fantastic colors.
In addition to the foliage season, there are also cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and snowfall in winter, making it a great spot to relish the changing seasons.

Yabakei has several trekking courses allowing visitors to choose a destination and route suiting their fitness and experience levels, like the Kyoshuho Cliff Exploration Path, which leads to the popular photogenic spot Ao-no-Domon at the foot of the mountain.

Our hosts took the intermediate course of the Kyoshuho Cliff Exploration Path (duration: approx. 70 mins), experiencing a number of thrills like cave and rock walking while being in awe of the temples cared for by the land’s ancestors, along with the various stones, rocky peaks, and other grand scenery.

As Nakatsu City is also the holy land of karaage, our hosts stopped by Yabakei karaage specialists Murakami Shokudo to enjoy some freshly fried juicy local chicken and recharged their energy.

Bicycle rental is also available at the Ao-no-Domon Cycling Center Fusuien, so you can race through nature on a refreshing cycling trip.
The Maple Yabakei Cycling Road is gentle and without any steep slopes, making it great for beginners.

To rest up after a stroll through Yabakei, we recommend stopping at Niwa Chaho near Nakatsu Station, who opened their Niwa Chaho Cafe specializing in Japanese tea.
Amongst the relaxed, quaint Japanese ambiance, you’ll be able to relish the elegant, fine aromas and flavors of authentic Japanese tea alongside special homemade matcha parfait sets, hojicha soda with homemade tea syrup, and more.
