AC & DC Protection for the UK Power System

Synopsis: The UK power system is changing, providing the greatest challenge to the system operators since the 1960s. The retiring of coal fired power stations, growing penetration of renewable Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and integration of power electronic interconnections are all changing the characteristics of the UK electricity network. Add to this the developments in Demand Side Response (DSR), energy storage and electric vehicle charging, then there will no longer be a one-way energy flow from large remote generators to distributed load centres. A dynamic system topology will require more intelligent protection solutions to maintain a safe, secure, reliable & economical supply to the customer.
