Why Tulsi Cursed Vishnu?

The story of Jalandhara and Vrinda is another captivating story from the treasure of Hinduism. Vrinda’s purity was the reason that was driving her husband, Jalandhara’s invincibility. Lord Vishnu had to resort to trickery in order to defeat Jalandhara and in the process, he was cursed by Vrinda.

This story also describes why Sita had to be separated from Rama, because of curse of Vrinda and why Vrinda is treated with respect in Hinduism as the wife of Vishnu.

Vishnu then created an illusion that Jalandhara was killed by Shiva and brought back to life by him. Vrinda then embraces Jalandhara who was actually Lord Vishnu in disguise. This destroyed her chastity. Vrinda realised that it was Vishnu in disguise. She cried and wailed at the loss of her chastity. Deeply saddened and infuriated about everything that happened, she cursed Vishnu that his wife will also be abducted by someone which came true in Treta yuga when Ravana abducted Sita, the wife of Vishnu’s seventh incarnation. Upon cursing Vishnu, Vrinda sacrificed herself. In the meantime, Jalandhara was killed by Lord Shiva with his trident after which his soul merged with Lord Shiva.

After her death, Vrinda was blessed by Vishnu that since he destroyed her chastity, he would marry her. Vrinda became the Tulsi plant in her next birth and she was blessed with the boon of becoming the wife of Lord Vishnu. Hence, the significance of the Tulsi Vivah across various parts of India.
