This video shows how to determine deck height on our boosted LS 408 cubic inch engine. We have to determine deck height of the pistons in order to select the proper compressed thickness of our head gaskets. The reason this procedure is done is to avoid piston to cylinder head collision, if our piston to cylinder head clearance is too small i.e. ( under 0.040" ). catastrophic engine failure can ensue. Also covered in this video is how to calculate piston compression height in order to determine if the top of the piston ends up above or below the engine block deck surface. We then verify our calculations using a dial indicator on deck of the engine block and show how important this engine building procedure is. Also static compression ratio is calculated in this turbo charged engine using a couple different gasket thickness's for demonstration purposes.
