The image of creating a curve often leads skaters to change the direction of their foot at the ankle. This does not change the fact that a skater must always place the toe or heel of the boot directly straight. To increase the depth of the edge, the ankle presses more forcefully to the inside/outside of the boot. The skating knee and hip joint bend deepens proportionally.

The only exception to this is when the blade is placed perpendicular to the direction of travel in order to STOP.

As an ice dancer, I use the British term “progressive” rather than "crossover" because the word demands that the skater move weight over the forward skating foot with each step.

In order to make a curve, edges are created by using ankle pressure on one side of the boot/ blade. The resulting curve creates the circles and lobes that give the sport its name.
