Overcoming Dog to Dog Aggression The Journey of Montey the Miniature Pinscher.
Welcome to Dog World and You, LLC's YouTube channel. Today, we have an incredible story about Michael and his Miniature Pinscher, Montey. Michael adopted Montey eight years ago after his family surrendered him due to his dominant and independent nature. Michael and Montey formed an incredible bond until Michael met Nancy and her Miniature Poodle, Bella. Montey struggled to accept Nancy and her dog, and his aggression towards Bella created stress in their relationship. Seeking help, they were referred to Dog World and You, LLC. Michael, Nancy, and Montey came together for consultation with a strong desire to dedicate themselves to the training process and help Montey and each other. During the consultation, Dog World and You, LLC's behaviorist explained that aggression can stem from various factors such as dominance, fear/anxiety, hormones, changes in the household, lack of training, socialization, or trauma. Treatment involves avoiding aggressive situations and triggers, starting a "nothing in life is free" program, giving preference to one dog, desensitization and counterconditioning, and even medication. Treating aggression in dogs takes time and effort, and every household member must be on the same page to be successful. Aggression can be inadvertently reinforced by owners who interfere with normal social rituals, scold, or yell at the dog, respond inconsistently to the dog's behavior, or lack control over their dog's behavior. Punishment should be avoided as it can escalate aggression. Owners should prevent competition for resources, excitement-inducing situations, and separate the dogs if needed. Desensitization and counterconditioning are helpful techniques to teach positive experiences when the dogs are near each other. To ensure safety, dogs should wear head collars and trailing leashes. Basket muzzles can also be used, but not traditional muzzles that close the mouth. After the consultation and explanation of the rehabilitation process for Montey, they enrolled him in a 3-week behavior modification program. These 3 weeks were not easy for us because Montey resisted any training and showed his dominant nature, but with consistency and techniques that we discussed above, we made huge progress with Montey. After graduation from the program, we created a plan that the owners need to follow to succeed in the training process.
