STORYLINE:
The Bolivian government declared a disaster after floods across the country killed 40 people and forced more than 500 families to evacuate in the Amazonic region.

An overflowing Acre river has almost covered the international bridge between Bolivia and Brazil, and residents in the area have been forced to use boats for transportation.

Houses are underwater, and their residents are scrambling to salvage their belongings.

Others are guarding their houses in fear the situation may lead to looting.

Resident Carolina Araujo said after two years of consecutive flooding, she is considering leaving Cobija and search a safer place to live.

"Then we won't have problems and we can expect something else from life," she said.

Rainfall in February has been the largest in Bolivia over decades, and the weather authorities estimate it will continue until March.
